Founding Principals
Steven A. Karan, PE - Founding Principal
Steve is one of our Founding Principals with over 30 years of Professional experience in the field of mechanical engineering. He began his career at The Kling Lindquist Partnership in Philadelphia and then followed his love for New England, its people and its architecture when he transitioned back to Boston to Vanderweil Engineers. Steve continued his growth in the engineering profession at Symmes, Maini, McKee and then at SAR Engineers. Mr. Karan serves as Principal on projects and oversees the full range of engineering for BER. His other roles include management of our office team, working closely with clients and in-house continuous education of systems and Codes. Steve is a LEED Accredited Professional. His comprehensive experience includes design and managing projects for a variety of facility types in both the public and private sectors. Mr. Karan has a M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Northeastern University and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Rutgers University.
Marc R. Plante - Founding Principal
Marc was one of the Founding Principals of BER and will be truly missed. Marc and his partner Steve formed BER 27 years ago in Braintree, MA to provide a more personalized approach to clients in the construction industry. Marc started his career at Crowley Engineering in Middleboro, MA then moved on to Johnson & Stover in Stoughton, MA then went to SAR Engineering in Quincy, MA and finally joining forces to create BER. Marc was dedicated to the people of the engineering and construction industry and developed many long-term friendships along the way. Those who met Marc were left with a lasting impression of someone who was passionate about what he did and how he was always willing to help anyone who needed it. Marc’s presence and spirit remains missed by all who knew him.
